Populism is often explained away by sociological and geographical arguments which describe it as a natural emanation of certain socio-economic conditions and locations. An examination of the deeply contrasted public policies of two neighboring counties of the Lens region raises the question of the cultural and constructed nature of the political choices that nurture populism.
