Here, the author examines the resurgence of Islamist-dominated discursive formations. The author recalls the communitarian features of pre-capitalistic tributary formations, as well as the consequences of colonialism regarding the unfinished transition to capitalism and to the individuation of social relations in the Arab world. The first phase of independences marked the beginning of secularization. Just as much as internal factors, external factors were driven by deep-seated crises, which have given credence to Islamic discourse and activism.
