Reporting on the Brazilian experience, it is shown that activism in the non-profit sector relies on the symbolic foundations of an ordinary gift culture. And so, a democratic participative culture should be somehow the duplication of this primary gift culture. This implies the necessary institution of “hybrid public spaces” allowing an articulation between “primary” and “secondary” solidarity, between “Lebenswelt” and public action.
