Pioneers of reality TV, like the producers of Candid Camera in the 1950s, soon learned to activate a charisma of reality which continues to magnetize an increasing number of our contemporaries. Such TV shows have been developed in close interaction with experiments in social psychology and in hypnosis. A major synergy took place between the social sciences, media technologies, and power mechanisms, a synergy this article attempts to analyze in its historical as well as theoretical implications.
