After distinguishing several types of debts, this article invites us to reconsider the way we measure and count wealth. The debt crisis is first and foremost a crisis in measurement. The analogy of pollination helps us see what’s wrong: our obsolete modes of accounting only pay attention to honey, without including pollination or the welfare of the bees. This double blindness leads to more brutal and suicidal forms of exploitation, which threaten to maim us all.
