Private and public “debts” are a matter of words, as much as a matter of numbers. The chorus currently exhorting us to re-pay our debts sings a delusional tune, which this article attempts to debunk. The reference to our debts works as a predatory machine. The real debts which obscure our future, the social and the ecological debt, can not be “paid back”: they need to be “maintained”, in order for us to survive and prosper.
