In the 20th century, the emancipation of difference within the concept of Rhythm has freed repetition from its subjugation to identity. Rhythmic repetition is neither metronomic (linear), nor periodic (cyclic). Meter and periodicity are only external envelopes of a fundamental polyrhythm. Rhythm is not a transcendent structure or pattern; it flows in a microrythm, by linking one to another “critical instants” which are the crossing points of a process of becoming.
