The notion of civil society, although regularly criticized, occupies an important place in development policies today. This article formulates avenues of reflection for the study of non-western civil societies within the context of projects at the intersection of internal and external dynamics. It underlines the importance of processes of co-construction of norms, identities, and social representations or practices within these new social spaces.
