The forty-year-old institute was born out of a combination of several closely related concerns: the desire to preserve archives and make them readily available to anyone who wishes to consult them; to create a research institution that must adhere to the rules of rigor and scientific approaches required for social studies, as well as a place where scientific events such as symposia are organized, books are published, and a journal is regularly issued.
