The classic model of social movement theory offers only a partial explanation of the dynamics of movements such as the gilets jaunes in France, the 2019 protest movement in Chile, or the mobilizations reacting to the death of George Floyd in the United States in 2020. This article attempts to renew these interpretative grids by examining the liquidity of the demands, the figure of the “masterless crowd,” and the relationship of these movements to the sovereignty of the state.
