Emancipation must be thought of not separately, but as a part of education. Autonomy requires not only freedom from outside oppression, but also and above all the formation of a subjective animation of a certain ethos; of a certain relationship to yourself and the world, characterized by activity, reflexivity and creativity. Yet, this ethos can be favored by diverse educational vectors, in particular by the construction of alternative social spaces, heterotopies susceptible of producing a decentralizing effect and contra-socialization. Autonomy appears as an uncertain and unfinished conquest, always in need of restarting and prolongation across a dynamic process, animated by a painful tension between education and emancipation, and of the formation and self-transformation of subjectivity.
