This article argues that if democracy is defined as the power of the people to participate directly in decisions regarding the life of the polis, then it is democracy that makes people competent, not competence that produces democrats. In this case, the dangers of populism are not what threaten democracy as much as elitism, which undermines democracy by deafening the voice of citizens. One must therefore conclude that it is the anti-populist rhetoric that fuels the rise of the extreme right.
