According to Mauss, the gift is firstly a specific kind of “prestation sociale” or social service. But it is more than this : the “bedrock, ” the “human foundation on which society is built.” This paper aims to articulate these two dimensions of the gift – as a part and as a whole – in order to formalize a maussian typology of human relationships.
