Based on the treatment of autistic and psychotic children, this paper examines the concept of primary symbolization and symbol formation and different sorts of anxiety and defense mechanisms insofar as they constitute the more primitive level of expression, relationships, and language. As illustrations, this paper uses three clinical accounts from group work with autistic children.
