There is a large body of sociological literature dedicated to the career success of academics. It mainly analyses career determinants and therefore does not fully grasp academic careers. This paper aims at studying the “temporal forms of causality” which orient the professional trajectories of academics. It analyses more specifically academics’ modes of engagement towards their possible promotion as full professors and the organizational factors influencing them. It draws on two rounds of semi-structured interviews with the same academics (mid-career assistant and associate professors). The paper identifies three profiles : the “assigns”, the “investors” and the “hedonists”, and shows how each of them are likely to be influenced by specific dimensions of the university policies.
