Over the past ten years, transition has become a way of life in the DRC. In Maniema, a province created by Mobutu’s decentralization program, democratization becomes a process in which power goes to the strongest. The war has accentuated this tendency. When the exception becomes the rule and the social sciences lose their explanatory power, we must begin by describing the know-how of survival.
