From 2008 to 2013, being a southern member of the eurozone, Italy faced a deep double-dip recession (2008–2009, then 2011–2013), with a looming social crisis in the background. Both might have opened the way to an unforeseen political crisis, with in particular the electoral landslide of the Five-Stars Movement in the February 2013 general election. However, until the autumn of 2013, the successive administrations of Berlusconi, Monti, and Letta did not really modify the traditional rules of the Italian political game, and these changes of government did not imply any modification in the long-standing economic policy choices of Italy, with its strong commitment to eurozone survival. By the autumn of 2013, no signs of strong growth or of a new Italian economic miracle were to be seen.
