Just as Homer’s Iliad refers to a cult of gold in Ancient Greece, the Biography of the Emperor Mu of Zhou (tenth century BC) refers to a cult of jade in Ancient China. Archeological excavations have attested to the reality of this cult. This article shows how commercial exchanges in connection with this cult staved off wars. Therefore, this cult of jade symbolizes a pacific Chinese tradition.
