In the short story The Great Silence, writer Ted Chiang contrasts two stories that seem to have nothing in common other than their fortuitous geographical proximity: on the one hand, the Arecibo radio telescope in the north of the island of Puerto Rico, designed to listen for radio traces of extraterrestrial life; on the other, a species of parrot that exists nowhere else, the Puerto Rican Amazon, whose last refuge is the forest bordering the radio telescope… and which is on the verge of disappearing.
