In this reflection, drawn from the early experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the author parallels our fears and reactions to the dangers of the disease and to acts of violence. The viral condemnations that activists engage in on social networks partially reproduce lynch mob dynamics that were part of the supremacist master’s house. With the distance of online sociality, it is sometimes easier to call out bad behavior than to call in those who have done harm. How do we believe survivors while remaining abolitionist? How do we believe survivors while practicing transformative justice?
