While members of the Basij are committed to pursue their mission of persuading the poor to remain loyal to the Revolution and the regime, they join the poor in harshly criticizing the state for failing to deliver on its revolutionary promises of justice and equality. Exploring these dilemmas and contradictions allows us to understand the “contested” nature of loyalty to the regime in the Islamic Republic, and the contentious life of the Basij’s revolutionary politics in poor neighbourhoods, amid glaring inequalities, free falling economy and rebellious underclasses.
