The Memories of Lubumbashi project, created in 2000, with the aims at collecting oral sources on the history of this mining city (the second largest city in Congo and capital of Katanga) as well as pictorial sources and objects. The objective is to provide a counterpoint to written colonial sources, in order to draw a plural history of the city, by proposing a participatory and inclusive approach to the inhabitants. Life stories of the workers of the Mining Union of Haut-Katanga during the colonial period, stories also of their companions and their daughters, too often forgotten in historical investigations, family photographs, popular theater creations in Kiswahili (especially from the Mufwankolo troupe) that evoke the daily life of colonization, repertoires of popular songs are all examples of this large collection. The author invites us to a conception of history in connection with the citizens, attached to writing the daily lives of the “voiceless”.
