Global perspective on ecological distribution conflicts in India

This article offers a review of environmental justice movements in India, combining information from the Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas), fieldwork, and an analysis of secondary literature. The author emphasizes the intensity of the conflicts, the judicial weapons which reinforce the protests and the changes occurred in the slogans, as well as synergies, old and current alliances between these Indian movements. The analysis supplements the use of descriptive statistics with some concrete examples. Finally, there is a debate on the meaning of the term “success” applied to ecological justice, a subject on which further research is needed.
