Both grandiose and ironic, Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony epitomizes all the paradoxes of post-romanticism. Build on the stylistic contrast between “high” music and common one, the first movement of the Symphony points out the perspective from which the romantic megalomania can become something really revolutionary: the minority-perspective. Thus the Symphony shows how “grand politics” is nowadays still possible.
