Meditation on the functions of mythology and counter-mythology, in the work of Sun Ra. As the musician-composer never theorized, spreading his thought through small enigmatic sentences, this study explores fragments concerning his use and relationship to myth. Journeying among his prose and poetry, some interviews and film speeches, a view emerges of it all. Articulating it with the ancient Egyptians’ conception of myth, an analysis of the movie Space Is the Place reveals the strategic aspect of counter-mythology by this inspired jazz bandleader.
