The purpose of this piece is to describe some aspects of the naming process which make urban districts take shape and value. We mainly dwell on the results of a collective inquiry called “City Words”, which has documented the variations of the daily-life vocabulary in eight European languages. The article explores what may be called “lexical event”, i.e. the promotion of innovations by some actors, and the changes in semantic systems these innovations induce.
