The shield, which the medieval warrior systematically carried, is charged with both symbolic and emblematic values. It bears signs that are sometimes symbols, suggesting an abstract idea, and sometimes emblems, referring to a person. Heraldic ensigns are usually inscribed on the emblazoned shield, which is rarely worn in combat. Finally, it can also be charged with spiritual values and metaphorical meanings, and sometimes constitutes an interface between God, the angels, and the man who carries it.
