Few French historians have so far shown an interest in the history of wetlands, whether swamps, ponds, or peat bogs. While wetlands were until recently considered inferior spaces, seen by the political and scientific elites as a nuisance for human life and an economic liability, they are today a topic of considerable public interest. It is important that historians describe wetlands in terms of their temporal dimension, which has remained largely unexplored until today.
