This text presents Melville’s short story Bartleby as a path for us, when faced with a person or system that subjugates the individual, to circumvent figures of evil such as coercion, oppression or manipulation. It shows us the power of a very small statement - “I’d rather not” - that disarms the usual ways of thinking and acting about relationships of authority. Beyond fight and flight, it operates a mysterious disorganization of the forces at play, one aspect of which we present here in a clinical vignette.
