The patient consults a therapist in the hope of easing his/her suffering. What position can the therapist take facing such a request? Is it about suppressing the symptom or taking it into account? Between the medical model (centered on the past and the needed remedy), the social model (centered on the future and suggestions for well-being), the author situates Gestalt therapy in an existential model where suffering is received without judgment. Experience shows that not responding to the request as it is formulated and demystifying the hope of an idealized happiness, open up the way to unpredictability and allow for fruitful transformation.
