This article examines how various British administrations concealed more than 600,000 documents created during the colonial period from the general public and researchers from the 1940s until the 2000s. However, do these documents really enhance our knowledge of the decolonization of the British Empire? In fact, first and foremost, they shed light on the way in which British Imperial history is, and has been, constantly rewritten since by politicians, journalists and historians in the early 21st century.
