Taking the field of electronic engineering and nanotechnology research as an example of the growing convergence between academic research and industry, this article outlines the forms of “relational work” that academic researchers perform to build cooperation networks with the industry. The article aims to identify some of the social mechanisms underlying the formation and management of public-private partnerships.
