Iranian society has changed considerably since 1979. Given the growing opposition to the Islamic regime and the scale of the repression of the various protest movements, many Iranians welcomed the Israeli-American intervention, at least in its early stages. Well-educated young people, often schooled in the West, could facilitate a democratic transition in a country that is more united than it appears. Democratic aspirations go back a long way.
