The article seeks to question Jacques Lacan’s thesis that obedience is always conditioned by the signifier and the effects of jouissance. Lacan insists on this throughout his teachings, adding to this thesis various successive contributions to back up his re-appraisal of the status of the signifier, not only in language but in what he names lalangue.
