Since the arrest of opposition leader Ekrem Imamoğlu in March 2025, Erdoğan has eliminated the right to stand as a candidate, the last refuge of democracy in Turkey, in order to retain power. But the opposition has emerged unified and reinvigorated, making the outcome of the confrontation indeterminate.
