This article studies the risk management of shellfish farming in France. Evidence shows that there only exists a few numbers of insurance contracts for this sector despite a high level of risk exposure and an increasing demand for hedging instruments. Authors underline the main problems in defining risks in aquaculture and we propose a classification that takes the specificities into account. Authors show that public solidarity mechanisms and prevention prevail over private insurance contracts. Authors study the explanations for uninsurability that can be applied to shellfish farming risks. In particular, we emphasize a strong degree of ambiguity about the probability distributions and high transaction costs hardly overcome in a tight activity sector. (JEL: G22, Q14, Q22).
