In the Annales de l’Empire depuis Charlemagne (1753), Voltaire presents a précis of the history of Germany and its links with papacy particularly destined for young people. A commissioned work, this manual was in conformity with the pedagogical habits of the time, as can be deduced from a survey of other contemporary works. It uses to the full brevity and techniques of memory, while striving to retain the attention of its destined audience, carefully taking into account its interests and blending its serious narrative with surprising and entertaining details. Such a perfectly realized pedagogical approach does not just aim at “nourishing memory”; it gives birth to an ongoing reflection on the passions of men as well as on the misfortunes and the grandeurs of politics.
