Despite the fact that France has a very high-quality research network, the economic benefits of this network are extremely small. Jacques Lewiner has researched all the stages of the process, from fundamental research to the creation of companies, as well as filing for patents. This man has had many professional activities. He was a researcher and the scientific director of ESPCI Paris (École supérieure de physique et de chimie industrielles de la Ville de Paris), and he filed a large number of patents in fields as varied as telecommunications, sensors, and medical imaging devices. He took part in the creation of many companies, including Inventel (which designed and marketed the Livebox) and Withings (which opened the market for connected health devices). Based on his experience, he is very optimistic that now in France there are ways in which one can add value, and that little is needed to remove the constraints which until recently weighed heavily on research.
