The article studies the birth of obstetrics in 19th century Peru. This medical specialty was born from the importation of European obstetrical knowledge and its adaptation to the Peruvian reality. This new model is based on the coloniality of knowledge, which condemned and continued pre-existing knowledge and practices on childbirth (indigenous in particular) and imposed another regime, considered modern and civilized, that of Occidental medicine.
