A suicidal adolescent and the family secret: reflections after a
clinical encounter in the pediatric wardBeginning with the account
of a meeting with a young suicidal woman, hospitalized in a
pediatric ER service, we propose to put the problematics of family
secrets and adolescent suicidal crises into perspective. We analyse
the habitual relationship the adolescent has in regard to secrets,
and particularly, to family secrets. We reflect about the meaning
of the adolescent’s suicide attempt in light of the hypothesis of a
family secret. Finally, in this singular context, we think about
what is being played out in the encounter between the suicidal
adolescent and the psychiatrist during a hospitalisation in the
pediatric ward. This encounter is organised around transferential
issues which are made possible in the therapeutic relationship. The
medical confidentiality in which this encounter takes place between
the psychiatrist and the adolescent may allow the family secret to
be elaborated and brought up to the present.

The transgenerational transmission of trauma and unspoken
suffering. – This article deals with the transgenerational
transmission of trauma and suffering. It aims at clearing up those
amazing mechanisms of trauma from one generation to the other, and
at establishing clinical tracks to approach transgenerational
sufferings stored in the psyche. I will make use of different
theories and clinical approaches which helped me in these fields: –
The pattern of intergenerational transmission of trauma of E.
Tilmans (1995). – The concept of transference of K. Stettbacher
(1991). – The process of selection-amplification and
crystallization/pathologisation described by G. Ausloos (1995). –
The inner crypt of N. Abraham and M. Torok (1978), recently revised
by S. Tisseron (2004). – The ignorance of the reality of M. Selvini
(1995). Through several clinical situations, I will try to give
evidence that, more than the trauma in itself and the suffering
associated to it, it is the secrets, the concealment of reality and
the suffering associated that is pathogenic, and more particularly
for the next generation.

psychic course of a mother and her teenage daughter, following the
father’s death. The emergence of paranormal phenomena and thus, the
use of parapsychological theories brought by the family during the
interviews, open a potential and transitional area, enabling the
suspension of the grieving process and the questioning of the
assignments as a legacy left by the ancestors, including psychic
powers for some members of the family. The sessions, haunted by the
father’s and the grandmother’s presence, shed a light on the family
alliances and pacts, and enable their exploration and the
reorganization of intrafamilial and intergenerational links – until
the resolution through an object of relation which, by figuring and
containing the various elements at stake, determines the potential
area and symbolically closes the psychic course of that family.
