mentally ill peopleThis study examined lay theories about the
relationship between biomedicalization of mental illness and the
exclusion of mentally ill people. More precisely, lay theories were
confronted with the two dominant models which predict that
attribution of mental illness to biomedical causes should reduce
perceived responsibility and either decrease (attributional model)
or increase (biological approach) perceived exclusion of mentally
ill people. The goal of the study was also to assess the impact of
two factors disregarded from these models, responsibility type
(state vs behavior) and domain of life (family vs work). Data from
a representative survey conducted in the Nord Pas de Calais French
region (n = 12533) stressed the importance of the social circle.
Thinking about rejection of mentally ill people from their family
activated attributional optimism while thinking about the rejection
in the work environment activated an essentialist schema.

Introduction: Stigmatisation of mental illness constitutes a major
problem in the development of mental healthcare programs,
especially when it originates from health professionals themselves.
The aim of this research is to investigate possible attitudes of
stigmatisation among first and final year medical students
registered at the University of Conakry faculty of medicine in
Guinea-Conakry (West Africa). Methods: Focus group discussions
identified students’ attitudes and perceptions in relation to
mental illness, their explanatory models, their opinions concerning
traditional and modern therapeutic practices with regard to mental
illness, and their interest to possibly incorporate psychiatry in
their future medical practice. Results: Many students explicitly
regret the stigmatisation of mental health patients, but
nevertheless share the general population’s prevailing attitudes of
discrimination. The dominant stereotype of mental illness is that
of madness, although final year medical students describe a more
diverse spectrum of mental health problems. There is strong
adherence to secular occult explanations of mental illness and
advocacy for traditional medicine in addressing these illnesses,
including among final year medical students.Discussion: No student
would opt for psychiatry as a specialisation, although some
expressed interest in integrating psychiatry into their future
medical practice. However, this research indicates that
stigmatising attitudes are not cut in stone. Under the impetus of
specific teaching programmes, attitudes can evolve to create room
for tolerance and compassion.

From stigmatization to exclusion of the person designated as
mentally ill in AlgeriaAs far as social norms are concerned, the
experience of madness is stigmatizing. People that are mentally ill
are seen as being potentially dangerous or even violent. A
reductive cliché gives them a false identity thus making them more
vulnerable to social exclusion. In addition to their pathology,
mentally ill patients are subject to a social abuse. This sometimes
results in a strong sense of shame and self-stigma. In Algeria, the
mentally ill patients are confined to asylums and isolated places.
They are subject in their daily lives to significant inequalities.
From a sociological point of view, madness is perceived by society
as a cultural resource to consolidate the existing standards.
Pathological conditions are often interpreted as a phenomenon that
opposes normality. Indeed the patient is referred as “crazy “,
which implies, in the eyes of society, a real and/or potential
threat. Such a representation determines the social control
strategies (stigma, exclusion, etc.) that contribute to maintaining
the usual social order.

They observe that most institutions remain very closed structures,

Condemned everywhere, the functioning of France’s psychiatric

government choose to react to this catastrophic situation? By
