of possession as a dimension of passion. Introduced by Freud
in 1905, the concept of possession has been approached by many
post-Freudian authors, particularly Paul Denis, who considers
possession as a component of drive. The basic outlines of his
original and innovative vision are presented here. In passing,
portraits by Rodin and passionate figures from mythology,
literature, and film are cited, along with the role of possession
in the analytical context and relationship, supported by clinical
examples. The revival in recent years of an interest in possession
is no doubt related in part to the contemporary psychopathological
complexity of certain patients, requiring a rethinking of
psychoanalytical theory and practice.

forward the hypothesis of an irrepressible requirement of causality

symptom. A theory of the phenomena of passion is proposed through a
series of hypothesis linking passion with the reactualized
after-effects of early trauma and its primitive defence mechanisms.
The first of these is the splitting of the ego set to work in the
child’s psychism to face up to early trauma. Passion is an attempt
to preserve the integrity of the ego, jeopardised by the effects of
splitting. By putting into the object of passion the ability to
restore those bonds with their psychic contents that have been
split off from each other, passion is seen as a narcissic component
of being in love. Its inherent strength is identified as the
cohesive strength of the ego.

paranoia from his field of examination and studies the process by
which the threat made by one partner to leave the other may result
in a ‘crime of passion.’ We will look at the specific modalities
underlying Narcissistic relationships. The impossibility of
undertaking a grieving process of self, of excessive idealisations
and of the illusion of an atemporal and immutable welding, reviving
the pangs of primary abandon, trigger the murderous outcome of such
relationships.
