« The State and the "Local Exchange and Trading Systems". Controversies about Solidarity and General Interest. The Foix Trial Case »

Abstract

Smaïn Laacher [123-149] In november 1997, three members of a Local exchange trading system (LETS) were prosecuted for illegal working. For the first time since their creation in 1995, the LETS were confronted with the judicial system. These LETS aim to change the commercial relationship signification, by creating with a «local currency», new material and symbolic solidarity links. This trial has underlined some basic issues about social cohesiveness, State sovereignty, trading and exchange rates.
