This article gathers the testimonies of some thirty Ukrainian women who have taken refuge in Trieste (Italy). They reflect on their experiences before and after the Russian invasion of their country in February 2022. Through interviews and personal accounts, themes emerge such as the loss of identity and the feeling of abandonment by part of the Italian left. The women describe their daily commitment, the trauma of war, the difficulty of integration and the need to resist not only militarily, but also culturally and socially. The text offers an intimate perspective on a war often reduced to ideological narratives, giving space to the direct experiences of those affected by it and highlighting, rather than sacrifice and “martyrdom”, an irrepressible desire for a life worth living.
