Ce texte a pour ambition de comprendre comment les Français d’Indochine ont vécu les événements tumultueux d’août et septembre 1945 quand les Vietnamiens ont pris le pouvoir au Vietnam à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Comment les Français sur place ont-ils perçu l’indépendance du Vietnam ? Comment ont-ils compris la fin possible de l’empire ? Cet article accorde une importance particulière aux émotions, surtout à celle de l’humiliation, de la peur et de la haine, pour mieux comprendre la perception des Français d’Indochine de cette conjoncture si difficile dans leur histoire.

This is the End? The French in Indochina and the Fall of the Empire in 1945
Abstract
The text seeks to understand how the French in Indochina lived through the tumultuous events of August and September 1945 when the Vietnamese took power in Vietnam in the wake of the Second World War. How did the French there perceive Vietnamese independence? How did they understand the possible end of empire? This article pays special attention to the importance of emotions, above all humiliation, fear, and hate, in order to better understand the perception by the French in Indochina of this difficult conjuncture in their history.
