The term “qiaoyi transmitters” is taken from the study of semiotics but focuses more on the meaning and spirit instead of the form of a text. In this sense it is slightly different from “translators” or “interpreters” in translation studies. “Qiaoyi patronage” is borrowed from Andre Lefevere, which stresses the ideological, the economic and the status components of the “patronage”, and highlights the importance of ideology. This paper examines the traveling process of the Yijing from the disintegrated canonical context of China to the 1960s counter-cultural environment of the United States. More specifically, it discusses the interacting agents involved in the establishment of the I Ching as a counter-cultural icon in the English-speaking world. The author argues that three parameters worked together to form the qiaoyi networks which enabled the successful traveling of the Yijing to a new culture. The first parameter is the qiaoyi transmitters who undertook the specific translation and interpretation of the Yijing, among whom were Lao Naixuan劳乃宣 (1843-1921), Richard Wilhelm (1873-1930), Cary F. Baynes (1883-1977) and Hellmut Wilhelm (1905-1990). The second one is the qiaoyi patronage supporting the publication and promoting the influence of the I Ging and the I Ching, which includes organizations such as the zunkong wenshe尊孔文社 (Confucius Society) in Qingdao, the School of Wisdom in Darmstadt, the Bollingen Foundation in Princeton and the Eranos in Ascona, and intellectuals such as Hermann Keyserling (1880-1946), Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961), Bob Dylan (1941-) and Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) etc. The third one is the qiaoyi environment preparing and implementing the circulation and popularity of the I Ging and the I Ching, which includes the 1911 Revolution, the First World War, the Second World War and the Cold War etc. It is these complex networks that make it possible for the happening of specific qiaoyi phenomena, that is, the transfer of knowledge and exchange of ideas.

Cet article examine le voyage métaphorique et signifiant du Yijing du contexte canonique chinois à l’environnementalisme de la contre-culture des années 1960 aux États-Unis. Plus précisément, il traite des éléments impliqués dans l’établissement du I Ching en tant qu’icône contre-culturelle dans le monde anglophone. L’auteur soutient que trois paramètres ont travaillé ensemble pour former les réseaux « qiaoyi » qui ont permis le voyage réussi du Yijing vers un nouveau contexte culturel. Le premier paramètre sont les émetteurs « qiaoyi » qui ont entrepris la traduction et l’interprétation spécifiques du Yijing, parmi lesquels Lao Naixuan劳乃宣 (1843-1921), Richard Wilhelm (1873-1930), Cary F. Baynes (1883-1977) et Hellmut Wilhelm (1905-1990).
