L’immobilité spatiale et temporelle du bâtiment ne saurait faire oublier les mutations structurelles qui ont affecté et continuent d’affecter le secteur, au gré d’un renouvellement constant des techniques et des matériaux. L’article soutient que parmi ces derniers, l’aluminium a joué un rôle particulier, non seulement en étendant le répertoire des matériaux disponibles, mais en déstabilisant le bâtiment lui-même, grâce à ses propriétés physiques et esthétiques. Il montre d’abord que l’aluminisation du bâtiment est un mouvement tardif qui prolonge l’emploi de l’aluminium dans d’autres domaines, notamment le monde des transports. Il montre ensuite que l’aluminium a d’abord pénétré le bâtiment comme élément décoratif, avant de figurer comme élément structurel pour enfin dépasser ces deux emplois. Il précise enfin que ces usages ont notamment concerné des habitations légères et lointaines, comme les refuges de montagne, les stations polaires et les habitations coloniales.

The introduction of aluminium in the building industry (1924-1959)
The spatial and temporal immobility of the building industry (“immobilier” in French) should not overshadow the structural mutations that have affected and continue to affect the sector, through a constant renewal of techniques and materials. The article argues that among the latter, aluminum has played a particular role, not only by expanding the repertoire of available materials, but by destabilizing the building industry itself, thanks to its physical and aesthetic properties. It shows first that the “aluminization” of architecture is a late movement that extends the use of aluminum in other areas, including the world of transportation. It then shows that aluminium first penetrated architecture as a decorative element then as a structural component before overtaking these two uses. Finally, he specifies that these uses have notably concerned light and remote dwellings, such as mountain refuges, polar stations and colonial dwellings.
