L’approche fonctionnelle de la mémoire autobiographique a montré que les individus ont recours à leurs souvenirs pour trois raisons principales: en lien avec le self (fonction identitaire), pour communiquer (fonction sociale) et pour s’adapter et s’orienter (fonction directive). Cette recherche a pour but de valider en langue française la version courte du Thinking About Life Experiences (TALE) développée par Bluck et Alea (2011). Un échantillon de 537 adultes (18-86 ans) a participé à l’étude. Les échelles suivantes ont aussi été administrées: estime de soi de Rosenberg, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale et Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory. L’analyse exploratoire a confirmé une structure factorielle en trois dimensions et les indices d’adéquation de l’étude confirmatoire sont satisfaisants. La consistance interne et la fidélité externe ont été vérifiées. Les scores aux trois fonctions étaient positivement corrélés à ceux du passé négatif et de l’anxiété. De plus, le score à la fonction identitaire était négativement lié à celui de l’estime de soi et le score à la fonction directive positivement lié à celui du passé positif. Les propriétés psychométriques de la version française du TALE-15 sont satisfaisantes et permettent d’utiliser cet outil dans le cadre de l’accompagnement clinique.

French validation of the TALE (Thinking About Life Experiences) scale evaluating functions of autobiographical memory
From childhood, human beings remember their past and search for meaning in what they experience and do not know or understand. A functional approach to autobiographical memory revealed that individuals’ memories have three main functions: identity, social, and directive. The identity function involves exploring the sense of coherence and self-continuity; the social function involves creating and maintaining close social bonds; and the directive function involves making decisions and solving current problems. The Thinking About Life Experiences questionnaire (TALE) was recently developed and takes the form of a self-assessment that allows us to determine individuals’ scores for these three broad functions. The aim of this study was to validate the French translation of the brief version of the 15-item TALE. The questionnaire was given to a sample of 537 adults aged 18 to 86 years. Participants also completed the Self-Esteem Scale, and a subset of them completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory. Exploratory factorial analysis revealed a three-dimensional factorial structure. The model was tested through a confirmatory factorial analysis. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were verified. Correlations between mean scores of the three factors showed good convergent and discriminant validity. The identity function was negatively correlated with self-esteem. Moreover, there were correlations between the social function score and past-negative and anxiety. Finally, the use of the directive function was positively correlated with past-negative, past-positive, and anxiety. The psychometric properties of the French version of the TALE-15 are satisfactory and allow this tool to be used to clinically support adults, specifically those with psychiatric disorders who are suffering from identity difficulties.
