Social equality and the production of scientific knowledge

The case of participatory research in mental health

Pages 99 to 116

English

The production of science is, traditionally, the monopoly of researchers and this seems to be particularly true in the mental health field. But it is also a field in which this monopoly has been strongly disputed since the 1970s by people with lived experience of mental health problems. Their criticism of the traditional production of science has contributed to the development of participatory research integrating their experiential knowledge. Based on an analysis of anglophone literature, this article presents several types of participatory mental health research, their underlying epistemologies, and discusses their contribution to the development of egalitarian relationships in the production of scientific knowledge.
