How did Gaston Bouthoul perceive demographic phenomena? In his numerous publications, he expounds his position on doctrines as well as on population policies, revisits the main interpretative framework of demographic phenomena, and proposes some new notions based on a lexicon of his own. Thus, he develops a demographic thought, that is to say, a reflection based on an interpretation of population trends, which leads him to formulate priorities for action to encourage or correct these trends. To present this demographic thought, I start by examining the links that Bouthoul maintained with the world of demographers. I then present his population evolution scheme and, finally, the demographic policy he called for. Even if the observations made lead us to deny Bouthoul the title of demographer, we should recognize his ability to deploy demographic arguments outside the circle of specialists, in short, his ability to popularize the discipline.
